The International Business and Economic Diplomacy master students at IMC Krems embarked on an inspiring two-day study trip to Geneva, a hub for global diplomacy and international business. This enriching journey allowed students to engage with key organisations, apply classroom knowledge to real-world contexts, and build strong personal connections.
Story
Diving into Global Diplomacy
Diplomacy, Business, and Bonds: A Study Trip to Remember
The first stop was the Permanent Mission of Austria to the United Nations in Geneva, where Raphael Draschtak shared insights into the World Trade Organization (WTO). His talk covered how international trade negotiations and dispute resolutions shape the global economy. This was followed by an engaging session on disarmament led by Helmut Brandtner, highlighting Austria’s contributions to peacebuilding and arms control.
Later that day, the students visited the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). Here, discussions revolved around economic challenges in developing nations, such as development disparities and diversification. The visit provided valuable insights into how international cooperation drives global progress.
On the second day, the group explored the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), delving into how technology and connectivity contribute to sustainable development. The day culminated with a stop at Temenos, a leading B2B software company, where students learned about innovative business strategies and witnessed the dynamics of a competitive global enterprise.
Beyond Academics: Building Connections
The study trip was more than an academic experience - it was a platform for building relationships. For the first time, Thursday and Saturday study groups united, providing a unique opportunity for team bonding. Whether debating globalization, enjoying coffee breaks, or exploring Geneva’s picturesque streets, the students formed deeper connections.
Moments of collaboration and shared meals strengthened the group’s sense of camaraderie. The trip reminded everyone that teamwork and mutual support are crucial for future success in international business and diplomacy.
Acknowledging the Support
A heartfelt thank you goes to Nicholas Dudek for meticulously organising the trip and to Professor Florian Bartholomae for his support and guidance. Their efforts turned this experience into a memorable highlight of the IBE programme.
A Lasting Impact
This unforgettable journey blended academic discovery with personal growth. The students returned not only with a deeper understanding of global institutions but also with lifelong memories and stronger friendships. These experiences will undoubtedly shape their paths in international business and diplomacy, carrying lessons from Geneva into their future careers.
