Guide

Why do UoAS use an admissions procedure?

Because there are only a limited number of places on the degree programmes offered by Austrian universities of applied sciences. The admissions procedure allows them to pick out the most suitable applicants. We’ve put together an overview of what to expect, as well as some of the things that you should keep in mind.

Student
If you want to study at an Austrian university of applied sciences (called an FH in German), you need to apply for a place.

Step 1: online application

If you want to study at an Austrian university of applied sciences (called an FH in German), you need to apply for a place. The first step is to submit an application to your chosen FH online. You will need to register and then upload the necessary documents, like your school-leaving exam certificate (Austrian Matura, German Abitur or an equivalent qualification). These documents show that you meet the requirements for enrolment at a public university. Many universities of applied sciences also require a CV and/or a letter of motivation. This is an important part of the process because the FH wants to see that you have taken the time to consider your choice of degree and that you’re a good fit for the programme.

Keep a close eye on the application deadline!

Universities set deadlines for online applications. They vary from one FH to the next – and between degree programmes, too. The deadline is posted on the website of the university of applied sciences you want to apply to. You should find out as soon as possible when you can apply for your chosen degree programme.

Step 2: admissions procedure

If you’ve submitted your online application and you meet all of the entry requirements, it’s time to move on to the next steps in the admissions procedure. These will differ from one degree programme to another, and they are usually clearly explained on the university’s website. The FH you are applying to will let you know about each of the steps that follow in plenty of time.

Applying for a bachelor programme

When you apply for a bachelor degree programme, the admissions procedure could well involve several stages. In some cases, you will have to take a written test before you’re invited to an interview. Depending on the degree, you might be asked to submit a portfolio (for an architecture degree, for instance) or samples of your work, or take a practical aptitude test (e.g. for a health-related degree programme).

As there is no standardised admission test, each FH adapts theirs to the specific degree programme. The tests often include general knowledge questions and are designed to evaluate your cognitive skills, such as perception, recall and attentiveness. Some tests will ask questions on general topics related to the degree you’re applying for, while others might assess how good your English is. To find out more about the test you will take, check the university’s website.

The interview is usually a way for the university to find out more about you. The programme director or staff from the degree programme want to build up a picture of the sort of person you are. After all, it’s also a question of whether the degree is the right choice for you.

Applying for a master programme

The admissions procedure for master programmes usually includes a personal interview. In some cases, you’ll also discuss topics related to the degree, or you might be asked to provide supplementary documents such as project reports, work samples and so on.

What happens next? Acceptance, rejection or waiting list

After the interview, it’s up to the FH to make a decision. First, they will rank the applicants. The most suitable applicants will receive confirmation that they have been accepted, as well as information on enrolling and the start of the degree programme. If you’re not allocated a place, you will either be informed that your application has been rejected, or you’ll be placed on a waiting list – which will mean you still have a chance of being accepted onto the degree programme if a successful applicant drops out.
