Two people sit opposite each other at a round table in the IMC Study Lounge, surrounded by high seating in an interior with red and grey colour accents. One person smiles over their shoulder at the camera and sits at the table with their legs crossed. The second person can be recognised out of focus on the other side of the table and is talking to someone.

From concepts to companies: innovate, lead, succeed.

Our StartUp Management bachelor degree programme empowers you to effectively plan your professional goals and pursue your innovative ideas. Beyond imparting theoretical knowledge, we provide practical insights into the central concepts of start-up management – from inception to scaling.

The degree programme

Let’s start your story here: join our StartUp Management bachelor degree programme to embark on a journey that shapes you into a forward-thinking, adaptable leader ready to make a mark in the dynamic world of start-ups.

The focus is always on the ability to adapt to change.

ESTABLISH START-UP NETWORKS AND LEARN FROM PROFESSIONALS

One of our primary objectives is to connect you effectively: be it through participation in start-up conferences and hackathons, or shared experiences in coworking spaces.

A large number of our lecturers are entrepreneurs who will pass on their experience from their own start-ups to you. This will not only provide you with theoretical knowledge, but also practical insights and first-hand experience that will deepen your understanding of the requirements and challenges of start-up management.

Together, we immerse ourselves in the realms of national and international start-up ecosystems.

STRENGTHENING YOUR ENTREPRENEURIAL SKILLS

In addition to learning business fundamentals, you’ll explore how to promote innovations and protect intellectual property during your studies.

Whether you aspire to become an entrepreneur or not, identifying and realising entrepreneurial opportunities will be one of your strengths after completing this bachelor degree programme – a skill appreciated by future investors and employers alike.

AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO LEARNING

In our StartUp Management bachelor degree programme, we pursue an innovative teaching and learning concept: each semester consists of five modules. Each module is taught in the form of a “boot camp”, i.e. a one-week face-to-face intensive course. The boot camps take place approximately two weeks apart.

In the time between the bootcamps, you will review the previous bootcamp, prepare for the next one and occasionally have online sessions with your lecturers.

TIP

By the way: At IMC Krems, you also have the opportunity to use our Founders Lab alongside your studies. There, students receive support in implementing their start-up ideas and are guided through potential business ventures. The perfect complement to your studies!

During the course of your studies, we not only prepare you to make valuable connections and impress potential investors but also provide you with practical insights into all facets of start-up management to strengthen your entrepreneurial skills.

Curriculum

A formula for success: theoretical knowledge + practical experience

The programme is built on three pillars.

Semesters 1–4

The basics

At the beginning of your studies, you will gain an overview of business and economic topics as well as sustainable practices. You will deal with topics such as marketing, financing and law – always with a view to the opportunities and challenges in the start-up sector. The proportion of start-up-specific course content such as “Lean Startup & Effectuation” or “Networks & Funding Opportunities” will increase steadily from semester to semester.

Preparing you for the future, so-called future skills are another important part of the degree programme. Here, the focus is on topics such as diversity management, stress management and intercultural skills.

Semesters 1–6

The chronology

During the course of your studies, you will go through a typical start-up process – from the pre-seed phase to the foundation phase and the expansion phase.

First, you will learn how to develop and validate ideas in the pre-seed phase. The foundation phase is about establishing the business model, developing the first products or services and acquiring customers.

In the final expansion phase, you will concentrate on the growth and expansion of the company. The focus here is on increasing sales, tapping into new markets, expanding the product range and scaling operational capacities.

Semesters 1–6

The practical elements

You will discover that practical orientation is very important to us. Lecturers with practical experience from the start-up sector ensure a direct link between theory and practice. But that’s not all: you will also gain practical experience in hands-on projects, at hackathons, start-up conferences and excursions to successful start-ups.

You will complete your internship in semester 6. It’s your choice: either you put your newly acquired knowledge directly into practice and work on founding your own start-up, or you gain valuable experience at an Austrian or international start-up. Other include working in the field of innovation management at established companies or getting involved in start-up promotion.

Application and admission

Is our degree programme just what you’re looking for? Here are your next steps!

We’ve put together all the relevant information for you.

What are the admission requirements for bachelor programmes?

To qualify for admission to a university of applied sciences bachelor degree programme, you must have an Austrian school-leaving certificate or an equivalent qualification.

Do you have a school-leaving certificate issued outside Austria?

We’ll check to make sure it’s equivalent to an Austrian certificate in accordance with section 4 of the University of Applied Sciences Studies Act (FHG) when you’ve sent us all the relevant documentation via our online application tool. If it is not an equivalent, you’ll receive information on the supplementary examinations you’ll need to pass. In a nutshell, you will have the option of completing a summer school and the necessary supplementary examinations at IMC Krems or look for an external provider. In that case, you might consider our cooperation partner, the University of Applied Sciences Upper Austria: It offers a one-year International Foundation Programme which provides you with all the necessary qualifications you need in order to start your studies in Krems.

What proof of your language skills is required for our English-language bachelor degree programme?

We’ll assess your English language proficiency at your interview, so there is no need to provide additional evidence of your English skills.

Important

Do you still need to complete your military or alternative service?  If you’re a male Austrian citizen, we strongly recommend completing your compulsory national service before beginning your studies. This will allow you to finish your degree with no interruptions and start your career without delay afterwards.

We would like to get to know you as a person

As part of the online application you will have to write a statement of motivation and a short essay on a topic relevant to the degree programme. Predefined questions about your motivations as well as the requirements and topics for your essay can be found in the online application. You choose one of the suggested topics, conduct research to broaden your knowledge, deal with the issues and bring your own point of view to the essay. Your answers are to be entered in the fields provided.

Your statement of motivation and your essay form the basis for your application interview. Every applicant has an opportunity to introduce themselves in a face-to-face discussion, usually with the degree programme director. In addition to the personal introduction and your motivation to study, the applicant and the interviewer discuss the topic selected and the arguments used in the essay, as well as the topic’s relevance for the degree programme.

The application interview is held in the language of instruction of the degree programme and can take place either online via Microsoft Teams or in presence.

After the application interview, your statement of motivation, the essay and your performance throughout the interview are assessed on the basis of the content-related remarks, the manner in which they express themselves and the arguments used.

What are the dates for the interview?

There are usually a selection of dates to choose from, with quotas allocated for each date. You can select a date and time slot during the online registration process. We therefore recommend that you complete your application in good time so that you can benefit from the full selection of dates.

Once you have successfully completed your online application, it will be checked for completeness and accuracy. As soon as this process is finished, we will inform you via email and confirm your admission date.

Upcoming interview dates
