Three IMC students from the medical faculty, dressed in white, walk side by side through one of the IMC Health Labs. All three are laughing into the camera.

From family planning to end-of-life care – guide people through every stage of their lives. You will be equipped to support individuals in exceptional life situations, focus on improving health promotion, provide advice, conduct research, develop new solutions, and eventually manage or instruct teams.

These competencies are developed in our bachelor degree programme in General Nursing. A special benefit for you: choose your study location – Krems, Mistelbach, or Horn.

The degree programme

IMC Krems’ General Nursing degree will prepare you for a range of nursing duties. Combining theory and practice, it covers various nursing topics including acute care (care in hospital surgery and internal medicine wards), long-term care (for residents of care facilities), mobile care (for people in their homes) and rehabilitation care.

CHOOSE YOUR OWN SPECIALISATION!

In addition to the core modules of General Nursing, from the 5th semester onwards, you have the opportunity to personalise your study path with additional elective modules. You can choose from Paediatric and Adolescent Care (which currently does not replace specialised paediatric nursing training), Oncology Care, Drama and Neuro-Rehabilitation Care, and Crisis Care/Care in Crisis Areas.

Besides patient-focused duties, you will also be well prepared for the organisational tasks and community-related responsibilities of your day-to-day work.

AFTER YOUR STUDIES

As a graduate of IMC Krems’ General Nursing degree programme you will have the skills required to assume high-grade positions in the Austrian nursing and care sector, and meet the requirements of the Gesundheits- und Krankenpflegegesetz (Austrian Health Care and Nursing Act). But that’s not all: you have the chance to actively shape the future of nursing – as the field of Health and Nursing Care is currently advancing rapidly.

The broad scope of the programme offers a clear advantage: you decide after graduation in which area you want to start working in.

NÖ PFLEGE-AUSBILDUNGSPRÄMIE

Did you know? If you meet the criteria, you can apply for the NÖ Pflegeausbildungsprämie, which can help to finance your studies.

TIP

During the application process, you can choose your study location: Krems, Mistelbach, or Horn.

Our students have a broad perspective. They know that they will be faced with cultural challenges and language barriers in their work. This is why they practise using English in patient care and support situations on the programme. They can complete professional placements abroad, which is something that we actively encourage.

Curriculum

A formula for success: theoretical knowledge + practical experience

The programme is built on three pillars.

Semesters 1–4

The basics

At the beginning of the programme, there is a clear focus on the fundamentals of nursing and learning about nursing’s various fields of practice.

Courses focus on caring for people with a range of health circumstances and at different stages of life. In parallel with nursing expertise, you will also develop your basic medical knowledge. And just as importantly, you will be introduced to health promotion and academic methods.

Semesters 1–6

Practical experience

Each semester, you will complete a practice placement lasting several weeks. Practical training accounts for 50% of the degree programme. The cornerstone of this is the fourth-semester practice placement consisting of approximately 600 hours of hands-on training. This gives you the opportunity to immediately apply the skills and expertise you have developed in your lectures.

Your professional training will give you experience in a variety of areas such as acute, long-term and mobile care, and you will become familiar with the public healthcare system. We provide you with support before and during your practice placements: we’ll help you to select your placements and offer you special coaching sessions.

Semesters 5 & 6

Advanced courses

Towards the end of your degree you will study familiar topics in more depth, as well as take a detailed look at efficient work processes. You will apply what you have learned during your degree and synthesise your knowledge of the different fields of nursing, for example when completing professional exercises and cases studies. These are based on realistic scenarios to simulate complex nursing situations and require you to tap into all of your professional resources. They encompass entire nursing cases from start to finish – to help you provide your future patients with outstanding care.

A particular highlight here in Krems: In the 5th and 6th semester you decide on an elective module and thus have the opportunity to specialise further in your desired discipline. You can choose from Pflege für Kinder und Jugendliche (paediatric nursing care), Onkologische Pflege (oncological care), Pflege im Unfall- und Neuro-Rehabilitationsbereich (trauma and neuro-rehabilitation care) and Pflege in Krisenzeiten/Krisengebieten (nursing in times of crisis/crisis areas).
