The degree programme

Have you completed training in medical-technical services (Gehobene medizinisch-technische Dienste), midwifery, another healthcare profession, or a related discipline and are looking to further develop your career? The part-time Master’s degree programme in Applied Health Sciences offers you an academic qualification and opens up new professional opportunities.

INNOVATIONS FOR THE HEALTH SECTOR

Shape the future of healthcare – from the application of innovative digital technologies to the development of preventive and rehabilitative measures, as well as the integration of interdisciplinary solutions. Prepare yourself for the opportunities and challenges of modern health promotion, care, and rehabilitation.

THINKING INTERDISCIPLINARILY

The programme provides an interdisciplinary foundation and promotes the exchange with professionals from various healthcare fields. You will learn to communicate interprofessionally, incorporate the perspectives of patients and their families, and manage interfaces within the healthcare system – essential skills for a connected and future-oriented practice.

RESEARCH-BASED SOLUTIONS

Explore health science-related research that addresses practical questions and develops innovative healthcare solutions – from social health determinants and mental health across the lifespan to digital transformation and health literacy. With this knowledge, you will actively shape the advancement of healthcare professions and health research, driving innovations in care, prevention, and rehabilitation.

COMPATIBILITY WITH FAMILY AND CAREER

The programme is designed to be undertaken alongside your career. The classes typically take place every 2 to 3 weeks, from Thursday (starting at 2:00 p.m.) to Saturday. This structure allows you to have free weekends between the on-campus sessions, making it easier to balance your studies with work and/or family commitments.

A special highlight of the programme is the practical project, which spans the entire course of study. Students identify a challenge or problem from their professional practice and, in collaboration with their fellow students in a multidisciplinary team and involving the affected individuals, develop innovative solutions. These solutions can be practically implemented in the third semester. To present the project results in the best possible way and maximise their impact, students also learn professional presentation techniques.

Curriculum

A formula for success: theoretical knowledge + practical experience

The programme is built on three pillars.

Semesters 1–4

The core subjects

Learn to communicate interprofessionally, efficiently manage interfaces within the healthcare system, and lead multidisciplinary teams. By collaborating with professionals from various disciplines, you will develop integrated solutions for complex challenges in healthcare and prevention.

Effectively integrate digital systems and health-related innovations into practice to optimise healthcare, health promotion, and rehabilitation. Participatory methods and the involvement of end users and patients in the development of new concepts and innovations ensure that solutions are both practical and effective.

Acquire in-depth scientific competencies to develop evidence-based solutions and actively contribute to the advancement of the healthcare sector. You will learn to formulate research questions, conduct studies, and communicate and apply their findings in interdisciplinary contexts.

This programme prepares you for the challenges of demographic change, chronic diseases, and digitalisation. The focus is on evidence-based solutions, independent project implementation, and the development of multiprofessional interventions to improve healthcare and the quality of life of patients.

Semesters 1–4

The practical elements & specialisations

Throughout the programme, our lecturers incorporate their professional experience into the teaching. Issues are discussed and addressed through case studies. You will also benefit from learning from your peers, who bring valuable insights from their professional experiences.

The core of the programme is the practical project, which spans all four semesters. This project involves problem identification, planning, implementation, and presentation of the completed work. Together with your patients, you will develop innovative solutions for real-life issues from your professional field or address future challenges.

Additionally, you will choose either a specialisation in Infant, Child and Adolescent Health or Demographic Change, Healthy Ageing & Globalisation. You will deepen your knowledge in one of these areas.

Semesters 1–4

The research

A significant aspect of the programme focuses on the development and deepening of skills in philosophy of science and research ethics. Alongside students from the master degree programme in Advanced Nursing Practice, you will apply various scientific methods, learn to plan research projects, and conduct clinical studies successfully. Additionally, you will work on presenting research findings in various settings.

A particular emphasis is placed on the tension between evidence-based practice, standardisation, and personalisation, as well as modern knowledge management. You will explore how to integrate research outcomes into your professional practice.

During your master thesis, you will conduct independent scientific work, applying your advanced and new skills to address research questions. The thesis may be completed in groups and can be related to the practical project. It is also possible to collaborate on existing studies as part of your master thesis.
